For a number of weeks, the sixth generation iPod touch isavailable in the Netherlands. The music player finally got an upgrade and we are pleased with that. But how good is the new touch now?
A few weeks ago, the iPod touch was updated and placed directly in the (digital) shelves. That was needed because Apple released the fifth generation iPod touch in 2012 and since then, the music player has had little love. That's a bit understandable, because Apple spent years focusing on iPhone and iPad. However, the iPod touch is an interesting device for many, mainly because of the relatively low price and versatility. In this iPod touch review, we'll check if the latest model is worth the purchase.
Design and display: no renewal
The new iPod touch has no external update and therefore it looks exactly the same as its predecessor. That means the touch resembles a slim version of the iPhone 5 , with rounded corners and a compact size. The casing looks like all other Apple devices, and feels solid. Also worth mentioning is the weight, which is 88 grams low. In addition, new colors are available: dark blue, dark pink and gold (see below).
On the left side we find the volume buttons, the top of the power button and the bottom is place for speaker, headphone and lightning jack. At the back, we'll find the new 8 megapixel camera, which looks like a flash and a black antenna strip. So there is little news under the sun, but that makes the device no less beautiful.
The screen is 4 inches equal and uses a resolution of 1136 at 640 pixels. As we are used to Apple, the display looks beautiful, images look beautiful and the viewing angles are fine. The screen is not as impressive as that of recent iPhones but for most users fine.
Hardware and software: nice smooth
Underneath the hood is the new A8 processor, which can also be found in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus . The iPod touch processor is a little less powerful on paper than these devices, but you do not notice it as a user. Navigating through the interface runs smoothly, apps start up immediately and browsing with Safari is a pleasure. The touch is also powerful enough to effortlessly play graphically intensive games, rarely occurring.
The sixth generation iPod touch turns out the box on iOS 8.4 , the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. That brings some benefits, including the renewed music app and Apple Music (later on later). Where iOS 8 launched a large amount of bugs, we do not notice anything in iOS 8.4. The software is perfectly tuned to the hardware, works smoothly and looks calm and easy. The new iPod touch is updated to iOS 9 later this year , and it is likely that the device will also be updated in the coming years.
Music on the iPod touch
Although the iPod touch is a versatile device, it's a music player in the base. Many people therefore use the touch mainly to listen to music. Also with the new iPod touch that's great, and the updated Music app brings a lot of new possibilities. Of course, we mean Apple Music, Apple's new music streaming service. It is free to try for the first three months, after which you pay 9.99 euros as an individual user or 14.99 euros as a family (up to 6 users).
This gives you access to approximately 30 million songs, which is about as much as Spotify. A disadvantage of using the service on the touch is that you can stream only via Wi-Fi, because the device simply does not support mobile networks. If you want to use Apple Music while on the go, you need to save songs offline.

Also, we should not forget Beats 1, the radio channel of Apple Music that broadcasts live and found in the Music app under the Radio tab. However, Apple Music is not perfect yet, and it sometimes fights into something unlogical, making it difficult for you.
Of course, you can also use the new iPod touch as a traditional music player by manually setting up music. Your songs will then appear in the music app under the heading "My music" and will be displayed in a beautiful way. The app automatically searches a background with beautiful colors for any song or album, making listening to music even more fun.
Camera and battery life: good but not global shocking
The sixth-generation iPod touch features a new 8 megapixel camera, which, just like the iPhone 6, looks like a new one. The iPod touch camera shoots smaller screens, even though they look sharp - especially with plenty of daylight. If you shoot your pictures in the dark, then there's a lot of noise soon. However, there is a flash to provide you with more light.
The iPod touch is also capable of shooting videos in a variety of ways. Standard movies are recorded in full-HD at 30fps, but especially the options are to make timelapse and slow motion videos. We know these features from the iPhone and work well on the touch.

We can be short of battery life: it's just fine. At full battery power, the device will last for as long as the previous generation of iPod touch. This means that you can easily advance on a single battery charge for several days, even though it depends on how much you use the device. Play your music, then the battery will last for about 40 hours while watching videos after 7 to 8 hours.

The new iPod touch does not matter much, but it has some nice innovations. The new processor only makes the device faster and with the 8 megapixel camera, beautiful pictures are shot. Also, the touch is still an outstanding music player, with Apple Music being a valuable addition. For 229 euros you get a complete and versatile device that is capable of a lot. However, the iPod touch is not a replacement for the iPhone, and therefore especially suitable for those who want relatively cheap access to iOS and the App Store.
