iPhone SE Review: Old Known With The Technology Of Now

With the  iPhone SE  , Apple seems at first sight to step back. However, the familiar face hides a list of improvements. In this iPhone SE review you can read if a smaller iPhone in 2016 is still nice.

If you asked us the ideal format for an iPhone screen a few years ago, we probably had 4 inches. At the time of the iPhone 5 (S), 4 inch was just right: easy to operate, big enough to watch your social networks and play simple games. The larger  iPhone 6 and even bigger 6 Plus let us realize that a size bigger can also be very useful, especially if you use the device intensively.

Design: familiar but not outdated

So it was a time to get used to having a 4 inch iPhone when we removed the iPhone SE from the box. The device is  virtually identical  to the iPhone 5, with which Apple returns to the square design. No rounded screen edges like the iPhone 6, but sharper corners and an aluminum backing with white glass beams at the top and bottom. New is the color of rose gold, which was only available to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus so far . If you find it important to show the outside world that you are using an iPhone SE, you are designated by the pink-colored color.

However, it took only a day or two to get used to the compact design of the iPhone SE. This was especially important when we wanted to send a message while we left the train. With one free hand, we effortlessly tapped the words, while at the iPhone 6S it takes some more effort. You can also keep it handy if you use it as a camera, later on in this iPhone SE review.

The iPhone SE operates perfectly with one hand

Due to the many similarities with the  iPhone 5S  , it's no surprise that the iPhone SE is in your hand. Certainly, if you regularly manually handle the iPhone, you notice how much easier it is to move your thumb to the top left of the screen or compare the keyboard with one finger - compared to the 4.7 inch iPhone 6. operate. Also, such a smaller iPhone fits a lot better in your pocket.

The design is familiar, but it does not matter that the iPhone SE looks very good. We already found the iPhone 5S, and that opinion is not changed in 2016. The color of the back is extra bright due to the glass beams at the top and bottom and the color spacing is also really dark gray. However, there is something to say that when you buy a new iPhone, you expect it to look really new. In this regard, you are at the wrong address, given the similarities with the 5S.

Screen and features

The iPhone SE Retina screen is nice to watch, although the display resolution is 1136 at 640 pixels lower than that of the iPhone 6S (1334 by 750 pixels). The SE has a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch and aspect ratio of 16: 9.
If you're used to the smaller screen, you'll also notice that small details like small printings remain well legible. When viewing videos, the display delivers beautiful clear images, although you can better take another iPhone for the best video experience. For this we have been spoiled too much by larger screens.

The iPhone SE lets you easily and safely unlock your fingerprint thanks to the  Touch ID sensor, while the nfc chip makes the device ready for Apple Pay . As with the iPhone 5S, the lock button is on the top of the device. Because it's about a 4-inch iPhone, you can easily add it here, even if you hold the SE with one hand. On the left are the round volume buttons, including the switch to turn the sound on or off. The headphone jack is at the bottom, as well as the microphone and built-in loudspeaker.
3d Touch Is Missing At The iPhone Se
Apple has chosen not to add 3D Touch to the iPhone SE. The pressure sensitive screen was introduced with the iPhone 6S. It can be used to activate additional actions by pressing your finger firmly. That's not possible with the iPhone SE.
3D Touch is currently not an essential feature, and if you have never had an iPhone with 3D Touch, you will not miss it at the SE. On some useful quick actions of app icons after we do not use the feature barely.

The lack of 3D Touch will only get worse if Apple decides to expand its function. These could be new features of iOS 10, which makes you an iPhone SE user out of the boat. So far it is not yet, but we can imagine that there will be a change later this year.

Touch ID and Hey Siri

Also, it's a pity that Apple has not provided the iPhone SE with the second generation Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus feature a faster version, allowing you to unlock the device at a fast speed. It's a difference of a second or two, but since you unlock an iPhone so often, it's a pity that the SE does not have the best scanner of the moment.

Apple's voice assistant Siri allows you to remotely activate the iPhone SE by calling 'Hey Siri'. For this, the iPhone SE does not have to be plugged into the wall socket. Useful if you want to ask Siri something but do not have hands free to push the home button. Ideal if you want to enter a timer while cooking, but have dirty hands or wake up remotely without picking up your iPhone.

Powerful hardware and good camera

Despite the familiar appearance, a lot has changed on the inside. In short, you could describe the smartphone as an iPhone 5S with the power of an iPhone 6S. Thanks to the A9 and M9 chips, the SE can measure well in speed with the 6S. In all areas, the phone feels a lot faster than the A7 chip where the iPhone 5S was equipped.
The iPhone Se Is A Power Pack
Apps open up fast, the interface runs smoothly and heavy games are no problem for the iPhone SE. Now that we have been using the phone for more than a week, we are daring to say that performance is also good for fanatical iPhone users. In appearance, you do not see it, but the iPhone SE is a real powerpower.
Another point where the iPhone SE leaves the iPhone 5S far behind is the 12 megapixel camera, which you can also use to make 4K videos. For comparison: the iPhone 5S has an 8 megapixel camera. In practice, we soon realized that the camera of the iPhone SE indeed did not undermine that of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Logical too, because it is exactly the same.

Even when you zoom in, you can make crisp shots, and after shooting a picture you can zoom in on a specific part, without blurring yourself. Certainly pictures with many different colors come up well, and the device can easily focus on itself. It's so useful if you are at a concert or sports match and count every second.
Strikingly enough, the 1.2 Megapixel iPhone SE front camera has remained the same, even though your selfies look better due to the flash feature that shines the iPhone screen. The front camera is good enough for common use, but if you want to make professional pictures, you'd rather use the regular camera.
Recording a 4K video with the iPhone SE is a fun option, although you should keep in mind that your device's memory is getting up fast. Certainly if you decide to purchase the 16GB model, this will undoubtedly cause problems. Besides 4K videos, apps are getting bigger as well.
Although the iPhone SE does not have a 3D Touch, you can use the camera to shoot Live Photos. The iPhone takes one and a half seconds before and after shooting the picture, so that a short video is made. If you hold the screen for a while, the still image will start moving.
Although 3d Touch Is Missing, The iPhone Se Does Make Live Photos
This is also a feature that owners of a 16GB model can better leave links. A Live Photo takes up twice as much space as a standard photo. Even if you're not shy about storage space, we recommend that you turn on the Live Photo feature only if you really want to use it. Most of the pictures we make are good enough when they stand still, and a few seconds of movement often add little to nothing.

Excellent battery life:

In the area of battery life, even the iPhone 6S has been checking. Indeed, the SE keeps it impressively long with the 1624 mAh battery. With ease, you can use the device for a full day without worrying about charging. This is due to the efficient A9 chip and the smaller screen that requires less energy. Additionally, iOS 9 has added some convenient power-saving features that increase battery life even further in case of an emergency. Also, the iPhone SE has lost energy to 3D Touch .
A  recent market research  shows that, in particular, Android users and new customers consider buying an iPhone SE. This has several reasons. For some people, the smaller screen will play an important role, but the iPhone SE is also the cheapest way to get a new iPhone. No crazy idea, because of the powerful hardware you can go ahead for a long time. For example, Apple will continue to support iPhone SE in the coming years with iOS updates. iPhone 6 (S) users will have to decide if the smaller screen is important enough to make the switch to iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE fills an interesting position in Apple's offer. It's the cheapest iPhone ever released by Apple, even if you get a device that looks like an iPhone a few years ago. Also, Apple has made concessions to keep the price as low as possible. This includes the lack of 3D Touch, a less fast fingerprint scanner and the outdated front camera. However, look ahead and you'll see an iPhone with powerful performance, impressive camera and battery life, even the 6S may be jealous.
It's especially about the way you use an iPhone, depending on whether the iPhone SE is for you. If you're a power user, the iPhone is the primary way you watch videos, communicate and play games, then the 4-inch format might be too small. However, in addition to an iPhone you have an iPad on which you do these things, it is worth considering whether a smaller device fits you better.
For Power Users, The Iphone Se Is Too Small
Personally, we were strikingly accustomed to the smaller display while testing for this iPhone SE review, and matched the location of the iPhone in our lives. On the way, we use him to stay in touch, check social networks and sometimes play a game, but once we get home, these features move to the Mac or iPad.

Conclusion iPhone SE review

The 4-inch iPhone SE is ideal for people who use their iPhone on the go. We were used to the smaller device, which is well in your hand. Count on the amazing battery life and powerful photo camera and you'll have an ideal iPhone for a relatively low price. It's a pity that the SE is behind Touch ID, 3D Touch and the front camera, although these are not negatives that outweigh the benefits.

If you now have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S, you will need to consider whether a smaller size fits better with your usage. But if you're currently using an iPhone 5S or older, this is the ideal time to switch to a new model. The iPhone SE may have old and familiar eyes, like speed and camera, the device feels like a full-fledged, brand-new iPhone.
