The iPhone 6 is here! After months of rumors, leaked pictures and videos and fake tips that later turned out to be wrong, the device has recently been available in many parts of the world. We have taken him extensively and in this iPhone 6 review we put our findings in a row. Does the new iPhone meet the enormously high expectations, and does it finally offer some news under the sun? Read on to find out!

Design: thin and premium

Unpacking and setting up a new iPhone always gives you a special feeling. For many buyers it's a moment when they looked long and we would lie if that did not matter to us. Just like the case with previous iPhones, this device is again packed with a sublime package, and once the cellophane drops, a lot of things get started. First of all, the iPhone 6 is of course a bit bigger. The display has grown 0.7 inches to 4.7 inches, which has a repercussion on the housing. With 138.1 by 67 by 6.9 millimeters, the new iPhone is higher and wider than the iPhone 5S , but almost a millimeter thinner. The device is therefore very slim and reduces the iPhone 5S to a small and thick phone call.

Despite the larger screen, Apple has been able to keep its weight gain at the iPhone 6. With 129 grams the device feels light, but also not too light. Nevertheless, it is less heavy than most Android phones in this format and that is nice if the phone is often in your pocket.

The slightly modified design of the iPhone 6 is perhaps one of the most discussed innovations. We think the design is more evolution than a revolution. The sides and bottom and top are slightly rounded, but the housing is still of premium aluminum. At the back, the casing is interrupted by plastic strips, which Apple has probably done to ensure that the phone and wifi signal are performing optimally. Unfortunately we do not find the comics, but we can imagine some users find that they are detrimental to the otherwise so-liked appearance of the iPhone 6. Also, the strips in the space-gray version are more than the white or gold iPhone 6, which could be a reason not to choose this color.
To ensure that you can turn on the larger iPhone decently and with one hand, Apple has moved the top of the power button to the right side. The volume keys are on the left side and have been elongated, making them easier to operate. The button to mute the ringtone is usually above the volume keys. At the bottom are headphone and lightning cables, as well as the microphone and speaker. In spite of being a single speaker, this produces sufficient (although shaky) sound in our case. With a palm, the speaker is easy to mute, but it did not happen during our tests.
iPhone 6 hands-on
All in all, we are very much talking about the design of the iPhone 6. The smartphone is thin and light, feels firm and has excellent finish. World-shocking, of course, is not the design, but we also did not need drastic changes as far as we are concerned. The only (minor) disadvantage of the redesigned design is the excellent camera lens, which causes the iPhone to slip flat on the table. Some colleagues describe it as a "bump" and Apple even chose to brush the bulge on a number of promotional plates. The excellent lens is not a  dealbreaker  and a layer of solid sapphire glass prevents damage.

Screen: slightly larger

Both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus feature a larger display. In this review we will focus primarily on the screen of the former. This has a 4.7 inch ips panel with a resolution of 1334 by 750 pixels. That's sharper than the 1136 at 640 pixels of the 5S, but because the image has grown, the pixel density is exactly the same: 326 ppi. In sharpness, you will not notice any difference, but the advantage is that more apps are displayed on the homescreens and you see at a glance more text from, for example, a website.

At the time of writing, aside from Apple's apps, few apps have been updated to use the larger display. Apps like WhatsApp and YouTube are slightly stretched and unsharp. However, we expect that there will be a change in the short term, so the interface always looks tight, no matter what app you're using. This is especially nice for users of the iPhone 6 Plus, as the "distortion" on that device is even more visible.

But to say that the screen of the iPhone 6 looks blurry, goes a bit far. iOS 8 still looks tight and websites, photos and videos are displayed well. Furthermore, the viewing angles of the ips panel are excellent and the same applies to color reproduction. If you go outside, you have a lot of mirrors and you need to scratch the brightness to read the image properly. The bright and more contrasting super-amoled screens of competing phones such as the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 are giving more impression in this area.

Hardware: A pleasure in use

iPhones have been known for years for the way in which the software and hardware are perfectly matched and that's not the case with the iPhone 6. The new Apple phone may have less impressive specs on Android than Android devices in the same price range, but in use you will not notice anything about it. Navigating through iOS 8 is a real pleasure because everything goes smoothly: switching between apps and homescreens until checking notifications, mapping, and updating your status on Facebook. Even though there is only one dual-core A8 chip and 1GB of memory on board, you never have the idea that the device is in short supply. The browser and camera start smoothly and are almost ready for use.

Also with heavy 3D games, the iPhone 6 has no problem. Asphalt 8 and Epic Zen Gardenare just examples of apps that use the new Metal technique. Thanks to Metal, games can work more efficiently with internal hardware. Playing eyes makes it more beautiful and more objects can be displayed at the same time without haperings occurring. Especially at Epic Zen Garden, a tech demo in which you can tap and swip through a house with a beautiful garden, it's good to see what stunning graphics iOS 8 can print from the available hardware. It all looks retestrack and smooth and in spite of the thousands of butterflies, leaves and other effects, the picture is nowhere near. That promises a lot of good for the future of the iPhone, as developers become more familiar with Metal. But even now, we are impressed with the performance of the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6 (Plus) is also the first Apple phone that has NFC. With this chip, which can also be found in the ING and ABN AMRO's over-chip card and debit cards, it will be possible to pay without contact. We say later, as the pay-per-date Apple Pay is not yet available in our country. We expect a change in the beginning of 2015, and by then, this review will obviously update.

Software: iOS becomes mature

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are standard on iOS 8 , the latest version of Apple's operating system, which is also available for older iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch (5th generation). The new operating system has changed slightly compared to iOS 7, but as you can read in our recent iOS 8 reviewbrings the new version quite a lot of improvements. This way you can finally use alternative keyboards with smarter text prediction and better auto correction. Something that especially users who regularly chat, email or text will appreciate. Also nice are the interactive notifications that you can follow immediately upon receipt. For example, you can quickly answer iMessages without having to start the same-name app. Currently there are few apps that support interactive notifications, but we expect rapid change here.
All new in iOS 8 is Health, an app that lets you compose a medical passport for yourself. Due to Health, emergency workers have access to the data you have entered in case of emergency. This information can be accessed from the lock screen via Emergency> Medical ID. For example, you can indicate which blood group you have, whether you are a donor and who should be called in case of an emergency. That sounds very useful, but the question is whether and how many iPhone owners will use it. Health requires you to enter and keep the necessary information, and probably not everyone is looking forward to it.
We ourselves use the app primarily to track the distance we take daily. A graph shows how many kilometers you traveled and what your average is per day. By tapping the graph, you can see how many meters you've taken per minute, although this view is not clear due to the large number of results.

Camera: The best ever

Apple has always provided the iPhone with good cameras and the iPhone 6 is no exception in this area. Although the maximum resolution of camera-shot shooting (8 megapixels) has not increased, there is a new sensor with larger pixels on board, allowing you to make beautiful photos in low light situations. The front and back cameras have both a f / 2.2 aperture and it is possible to shoot hd videos (1080p) at 30 or 60 frames per second. You can also shoot slow motion movies again, this time with 240 frames per second. The possibilities are not enormously extensive, but it remains cool to see certain things extremely delayed. Everyday tasks and events have an impressive cinematic effect.
About the quality of the pictures that shoot the camera, we are very talkable. Peaches have a lot of detail and eyes sharp even on a drizzle weekday. When shooting close-up of objects, the camera shines quickly and the background fades slightly. Making photos with a sharp depth of field effect is very simple.
The same goes for the camera app itself. You can easily swip from capture mode and optionally add filters. Full extended settings (iso-value, white balance) are still missing, but for quick photography, the camera is perfect. By sweeping down and above, you can adjust the brightness slightly. Also, it's nice that you can shoot the new iPhone with a higher resolution: it's easy and the resulting image is almost always worth sharing.

Please note that only the iPhone 6 Plus camera has optical image stabilization. The image stabilization of the regular iPhone 6 is done software-wise and is therefore less powerful in some situations (with much motion). Nevertheless, he shines very fast and when you get the iPhone out of your pocket, he is ready to shoot.

Battery life: almost the same

As said, the iPhone 6 has a larger screen than its predecessor, and the resolution has also been screwed up. This has also increased the power consumption of the display and so it is not so crazy that Apple chose to provide the smartphone with a larger 1810 mAh battery. For comparison: the iPhone 5S does it with a 1500 mAh battery. Although the battery of the new iPhone has more power, it performs almost the same as that of the 5S. Standby time is still around 10 days, and with the smartphone you can listen to music for about 50 hours and browse for 10 to 11 hours.
These figures are less impressive than those of Samsung's high-end smartphones, which, thanks to energy saving mode, can be used for more than two days before they need to be recharged. The iPhone 6 is empty after one and a half to two days, of course depending on how much you use the device. In practice, you will have to hang it on the charger all day.

Conclusion iPhone 6 review

We conclude with a preliminary conclusion about the iPhone 6. Although we have felt the device widespread, there are certain things (such as contactless pay and health features) that are currently not (yet) incorrect. Here, however, we will go into the coming days; So expect an extensive update of this review.

Nevertheless, we already have a good picture of the new iPhone and our judgment is therefore very positive. Despite the plastic strips on the back and the camera lens that protrudes, the iPhone 6 has a beautiful design with a sublime finish that you do not often see on smartphones. The device feels thin and light and is pleasantly in hand. The screen is sharply no progress, but because it has grown, it can show more information. On the other hand, the display is not so big that you can not handle the iPhone anymore; on the contrary.
We are also pleased with our performance. The iPhone 6 never fails and it's really a pleasure to swipe through the interface and use all the new features in iOS 8. Hard and software are perfectly matched, providing unrivaled user experience. In this regard, the new iPhone makes expectations more than true, even though the smartphone may not be innovative.
